Optical Coherence Tomography – A New Monitoring Tool for Multiple Sclerosis?
نویسنده
چکیده
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system (CNS) with inflammatory demyelinating lesions and neuronal loss that is clinically characterised by unpredictable clinical relapses, remissions and progression of disability over time. Damage occurs to the myelin sheath that surrounds and protects nerve cells; this slows down or blocks messages between the brain and the body, leading to the symptoms of MS. The disease usually begins with one or more clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) leading to a relapsing– remitting phase (RRMS) that is accompanied by a varying degree of impairment. After 10–15 years, approximately 50% of these patients advance to the secondary progressive form of the disease, which is characterised by a slow but progressive decline in performance with or without superimposed relapses. Approximately 10–15% of MS patients show progression from the onset (primary progressive MS [PPMS]). Symptoms are highly heterogeneous from one patient to another. More recently, our attention has been focused on the nonphysical symptoms such as fatigue and cognitive symptoms.

Optical Coherence Tomography and Corpus Callosum Index in Cognitive Assessment of Multiple Sclerosis Patients
Background: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disease of central nervous system. Different approaches have been developed to study MS progression and cognitive dysfunction as the major symptom of the disease. The current study compared Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Corpus Callosum Index (CCI) for the early evaluation of cognitive dysfunction in MS patients. Objectives: T...
متن کاملDetermination of Minimum Data Set for Designing a Diagnosis Decision Support System and Medication Follow-Up for Multiple Sclerosis
Background and Purpose: Diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) is complicated because of the lack of definite factor. Decision support systems are expert systems which help physicians in decision-making process. First step in designing the system is identification of a minimum dataset (MDS). This study aimed to determine minimum dataset required to design diagnosis decision support system. Mater...
متن کاملPatterns of Retinal Damage Facilitate Differential Diagnosis between Susac Syndrome and MS
Susac syndrome, a rare but probably underdiagnosed combination of encephalopathy, hearing loss, and visual deficits due to branch retinal artery occlusion of unknown aetiology has to be considered as differential diagnosis in various conditions. Particularly, differentiation from multiple sclerosis is often challenging since both clinical presentation and diagnostic findings may overlap. Optica...
متن کاملOptical Coherence Tomography in Multiple Sclerosis and Neuromyelitis Optica: An Update
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) uses light interference patterns to produce a cross-sectional image of the retina. It is capable of measuring the unmyelinated axons of the retinal ganglionar cells as they converge on the optic disc. In a disease like multiple sclerosis (MS), in which axonal loss has been identified as an important cause of sustained disability, it may prove an invaluable too...
متن کاملOptical coherence tomography and T cell gene expression analysis in patients with benign multiple sclerosis
Benign multiple sclerosis is a retrospective diagnosis based primarily on a lack of motor symptom progression. Recent findings that suggest patients with benign multiple sclerosis experience non-motor symptoms highlight the need for a more prospective means to diagnose benign multiple sclerosis early in order to help direct patient care. In this study, we present optical coherence tomography an...
متن کاملComparison of Choroidal Thickness in Psoriasis and Control Groups Using Optical Coherence Tomography
Background and Objective: One of the most common extracutaneous complications in psoriasis patients is ocular complications, which is controversial concerning its effect on choroidal thickness. This study aimed to compare the psoriasis patients with healthy individuals in terms of the thickness of the choroidal layer using the optical coherence tomography technique. Materials and Methods: In t...
